Why are there limited variety of plants found in the sigatoka sand dunes?
The first National Park, Sigatoka National Park opened in July, 1989. It has area of about 650 hectares. The dunes has a massive diversity of endemic and exotic (introduced) plant species. It is around 3 km away from the Sigatoka town. The sand in the dunes is deposited in the north west direction because of the South East trade winds blowing the sand inland. The dune has grassland, woodland, savannah vegetation which has many types of species. The area was formed by the fluvial processes while the sand goes under the eroding process either by wind (aeolian), water/ rainfall, humans. It is the largest archiological site in the Pacific and is being protected. The dunes is also protected from the invasive plants and these plants come from the rubbish dump nearby. The vegetation type in the dunes have been severely affected by the fire, cutting, grazing and clearing forests for wood.
