Islamic terrorists, mostly Saudi nationals linked to Al Qaeda, flew two large passenger aircraft into the Twin Towers of the New York World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, in an effort to deter opposition to their social and political agenda. The hijackers committed suicide while killing over 3000 people from many countries who worked in the towers. They were trained and funded by groups linked to Osama Bin Laden (finally tracked down and killed by the US military in 2011).

(The buildings, being huge metal structures, were not "knocked down," but rather collapsed of their own weight when structural elements were damaged by burning fuel from the planes.)

The September 11 attacks occured on September 11, 2001. Two planes were hijacked and struck the World Trade Center in New York City and another plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. A fourth plane was set to hit the capital in Washington, D.C., but the passengers aboard the plane took back control from the hijackers and crashed the plane into a field in Pennsylvania.

Sadly, yes. Eight kids between the ages of 2 and 11 years old were killed on two of the hijacked planes (five on Flight 77 and three on Flight 175). There was also an 18 year old killed in the World Trade Center (which technically is not considered a "kid" anymore but still so young).

The initial concept dates back to 1946 for a "World Trade Center" Development. There were numerous delays for a variety of reasons. However, demolition did not actually began until March 1966. The first tenants moved into the north tower in Dec 1970 with the first tenants moving into the south tower in Jan 1972. The ribbon cutting ceremony was in April 1973.

The youngest victim of the Pentagon attack was 3 year old Dana Falkenberg. She was killed on board American Airlines Flight 77 with her parents and her 8 year old sister, Zoe, when it crashed into the Pentagon.

Both buildings (North and South Tower) were 110 stories - at the time the highest that could be built - becasue water had to be pumped to the top floors for bathrooms and fountains - and pumps were not that strong/cost effective when they were completeld in the early 1970's.
