How long does it take to get apnea results?
The doctor will examine the sleep patterns that you presented the night you slept in their facility. The electrodes gathered data and a video camera watched your unconscious actions. Typically they will know by the time you wake up how severe your apnea is or is not. Depending on how you are having it performed, they wait and have your regular doctor present the results to you.
Is cpap machine uncomfortable?
The CPAP machine is not really something that affects comfort, in and of itself. The mask can take some getting used to for a new patient. Is is different, especially having something attached to your face while you slept, when previously this has never been an issue.
Most patients adjust to the use of CPAP pretty easily. For some, there is some minor discomfort. These problems can usually be addresses by changing the type of equipment. Some people feel claustrophobic having to wear a mask that covers their face. For these patients, an apparatus is made that uses nasal prongs called pillows. These are gently placed under the nostrils and usually solves the issue of claustrophobia for most.
Some people can get get by with just a nasal mask. This type of mask just covers the nose and bridge with a cushion that seals to the skin to provide therapy and can work quite successfully without felling like there is something touching all over your face.
Many people discover that after they have gotten used to one type of delivery system, they want to try something else. Initially i only wanted the nasal mask because I didn't like the thought of something covering my entire face. Now I have moved onto using a hybrid mask that covers the mouth and the nasal passage. This worked better for me, because I am a mouth breather who usually spends some time of my sleep cycle on my stomach. This delivery system ultimately worked better for me than just the nasal and after getting used to having the nasal, the thought of the mask covering more of my face didn't affect me as much.

Which part of cpap controls oxygen saturation?
The CPAP machine itself does not control your SPO2 or oxygen saturation, so there is no part that controls this. Simplified, SPO2 is the amount of oxygen, expressed as a percent, found in the blood. Your optimal SPO2 is determined during your sleep study. The RT or Polysomnographer that performed your sleep study would adjust your pressure, measured in centimeters of water, to determine what decreases your apnea events while keeping your SPO2 as optimal as possible. This is called titrating. So essentially the oxygen saturation is controlled by the pressure setting that is determined by your physician as your therapeutic level or range.
If by using a pulse ox monitor, you have determined that your SPO2 is dropping while using your CPAP machine, you should discuss these finding with your physician because a new sleep study may be required.
What is the difference between CPAP and BiPap?
The differences are in the way pressure is given and taken from the machine. Cpaps give continuous pressure to the patient, and that remains at the same level when the patient breathes out. Bipap provides different pressures between inhalation and exhalation. See Related Link.
