It would be a little safer to use a commercial insecticide, but you, your family members, and you pets might absorb the neurotoxins that are used in these insecticides. There are some organic insecticides that would not endanger people so much.

If you kill all of the spiders in a house then there is a chance that some species of spider that is actually a problem biter will be in the first wave to recolonize your house, and then you will have an unchecked population of something you don't want. Previously, the many other kinds of spiders (most all of which will eat other spiders) would have kept the numbers of the problem species down.

Absolutely. The Australian Red Back is a 'cousin' if you could say to the Black Widow and while VERY rare to have even been listed as a reported danger to the public, they are in North Carolina. I am on MCAS Cherry Point and have seen these spiders (specifically summer to fall) more places than I've seen just plain widows. I've killed many at my friends house and they were no less than obviously Australian Red Backs. The next time I find one, I no questions asked, would BAG IT and take it to your nearest Game Warden or Forest Rangers building. Why? Because it has gone un-reported that these spiders roam NC let alone this country and are gravely under-estimated as just an "odd black widow". The anti-venom is not only unavailable widely in the US but is different of an anti-venom than the American Black Widows. Spray the spider to death so you don't end up crushing the red back line and if your ever bit, quickly isolate the spider in a bag or some jar or something and take it with you to the hospital!

Daddy long legs do bite. They are not harmful to humans, and contrary to popular belief are NOT the most venomous spiders around. People believe that they can't bite people because of their uncate fangs, but the brown recluse (which IS harmful to humans) also has uncate fangs.

Also, the term daddy longs legs refers to three different types of bugs - one is the cellar spider, one is the harvestmen, which is an arachnid, but NOT a spider, and the other is the Crane fly.
