"Carambola, also known as starfruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka." (Wikipedia)
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Oxalidales
Family: Oxalidaceae
Genus: Averrhoa
Species: A. carambola
Carambola is a fairly complex fruit with many benefits like strawberries, but a small percent of the human population should be cautious of the fruit for health reasons. Like the grapefruit, carambola contains oxalic acid which can be harmful to individuals suffering from kidney failure or under kidney dialysis treatment. Consumption by those with kidney failure can produce hiccups, vomiting, nausea, and mental confusion, and fatal outcomes have been documented in some patients. Futhermore, like the grapefruit, star fruit is considered to be a potent inhibitor of seven cytochrome P450 isoforms. These enzymes are significant in the first pass elimination of many medicines, and thus the consumption of star fruit or its juice in combination with certain medications can significantly increase their effective dosage within the body. Research into grapefruit juice has identified a number of common medications affected, including statins which are commonly used to treat cardiovascular illness, benzodiazepines (a tranquilizer family including diazepam) as well as other medicines.
The star fruit is also known as Carambola. It is a fruit of Averrhoa Carambola, a specie of the tree native to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
It should be bright yellow, firm and waxy. It should have a minimum of give and brown spots. It should smell very faintly tart and citric.
There is no concern with eating starfruit. Buddhists are cautioned from eating onions, leeks and garlic and any fruit or vegetable that would cause intoxication.
Though a member of the Mesangiospermae group, Carambola (Starfruit) are not Monocotyledons (monocots), but are actually Eudicotyledons (Eudicots).
The Starfruit tree takes 4 days to harvest (3 days 20 hours real time).
There are many answers to this and many ways to divide fruit, but some of the common ones in a botanical sense are the simple fleshy fruits:
* berries - tomatoes and avocadoes fit here.
* stone fruit - peaches and plums
* false berries - bananas and cranberries
* pomes - apples, pears.
In a less strict sense, you might divide them into pomes, stone, citrus, nut, berries, and vine fruit amongst others.
