Most storage facilities do not have an account with the CRAs, so in most cases, no. However, the legal right exists to report non-payment to a CRA, so although it usually doesn't happen, it could possibly get shown on your credit report.

The storage facility has a duty to notify the tenant if a lock is not on the unit. If the unit was broken into, but the lock was placed back onto the unit, the storage facility can not be expected to know that the break-in even took place. The fact is, even if they notify you that a break-in occured, that doesn't really change the fact that the items stolen are no longer there no matter how long it takes before you find out about it. If a lock in not on the unit anymore due to a break in, an arbitrator may side with you in the event that additional items were taken from the unit after the break in because there was no lock (see below).

Most storage facility contract state something similar to "I agree to buy and maintain an insurance policy with extended coverage endorsements for the full and actual value of my Proprety for loss, damage or distruction due to any cause; active or passive. You require me to obtain insurance for my Property. This is a material condition of this Agreement. My failure to carry the required insurance is a breach of this agreement and I assume all risk of loss or damage to stored property that would be covered by such insurnace. My insurance shall not be subrogated to any claim against you, your agents, or employees"

In addition, most storage agreements have a mandatory arbitration clause. You would have to use arbitration in order to make a claim against the facility.

Tenants should always get renters insurance because when things like this happen, the landlord is not responsible. nor is the owner of the storage unit, unless there was negligence on their part. If the tenant doesn't have that insurance, they have to replace lost items at their own cost. They could always take the owner of the storage unit to court, but a judge will probably ask, "Why didn't you have renters insurance? That's what it is for."

You usually have to sign a rental contract or a lease agreement in order to rent one. Whatever the rental rate that is stated in the contract or lease is the one you are required to pay. However once the lease expires, the management has the privilege of raising the rent.

In short, yes. They may have some weasel words in their terms and conditions which say that they don't, but morally and on the basis of unfair consumer contracts legislation, they almost certainly should. I would suggest 2-4 weeks is th minimum notice they should give.

That depends, but in principle, yes.

The 'depends' part is because when you signed the storage contract you would have implicitly or explicitly agreed to the Terms and Conditions offered by the self storage company. Those Ts and Cs may or may not say that the company will inform you of any change, perhaps a certain number of days in advance.

The 'in principle, yes' part is that it is good practice for any company to inform its customers of any changes in their charges in advance of sending out the invoice or taking the direct debit. In some jurisdictions, consumer protection laws will make such items mandatory, even if you have signed a contract which does not require prior notice.

Even without the legalese, I would go to the company director or manager and raise the issue directly but politely, and if they do not see your reasonable point of view, I would move to another company. In my self storage company

It will be hard. Sometimes you can call the facility that sold your unit and get the buyer information, but usually they won't provide this. You can also try finding the auctioneer who sold it.

If a lien has been placed on your unit, it went to auction, and somebody bought your stuff, it is up to the storage facility manager whether or not to provide you the contact info of the buyer. Note that storage facilities HATE auctions because of issues like this that arise, but there's no harm in asking politely. Especially if it was a personal item of little market value, and you're talking about compensating the person who purchased the unit, you may have some luck finding the person who has your items.
