How common is type 2 diabetes amongst sumo wrestlers?

I do not meant to be personal, and I do apologise if it seems so!

I have asked the question because looking at pictures taken of sumo wrestlers, it appears that they have several features that is associated with a stereotype image of diabetes type 2 sufferers.

It would be interesting to know whether they really are more prone to diabetes type 2, or the commonly accepted image does not apply to each and every one of us.

Thank you very much for your input.

Lots and lots of training :D

Join a wrestling team, or find a coach or trainer who has experience, and connections to the area of wrestling that interests you (e.g.: collegiate, Olympic, Professional).

All he has to do is to want to become one. He doesn't have to be really fat or anything, although it can help, but in principle, he just has to want it. If he wants to become a professional in Japan, he has to be between the ages of 16-23 and be willing to dedicate himself to the sport and start a completely new way of life- the training and conditions are very hard. If he's not Japanese, he needs to find a stable (a club) that doesn't already have a foreigner. Not many left at the moment, though.

He would have to take up a high-calorie diet to gain weight and begin intense training with a sumo master or at a sumo wrestler school. No surprise, it would take a long time to achieve this goal and become a sumo wrestler.

They would have to join a sumo stable in Japan as an apprentice. It is an honor to do be able to get a position in a group.
The first step is to be accepted into a sumo stable.

Mawashi: The loincloth style belt is 2 feet wide and about 30 feet long. It is folded sideways six times, then wrapped around the waist multiple times (4 to 7) depending on the size of the Sumo wrestler. It is attached around the groin with a strap.

In sumo, a mawashi is the belt that the rikishi (or sumo wrestler) wears during training or in competition. Upper ranked professional wrestlers wear a kesho-mawashi as part of the ring entry ceremony or dohyo-iri. The kesho are given to the wrestlers by sponsors and supporters and can be very diverse and beautiful.

Those are traditional garment to keep them from carrying weapons.

Sumo is the national sport in Japan. It's an Authentic peek into Japan, dating back to Ancient Japanese Culture.

The wrestlers are called Rikishi- 'strong man'.

Every Wrestler wears a thick silk belt (more like a small diaper…) to their waist which can be grabbed by the opponent and used to throw the Wrestler out of the ring.

The samurai Japanese warrior wear Fundoshi - the underwear, which most of all resembled a diaper.

Why cant women do sumo wrestling?

The dohyo (platform) which the match is fought on, is blessed by a shinto priest. Unfortunately, in shinto religion, women are unclean and therefore cannot enter the ring area. Recently, this was a major issue as the champion's prize was to be awarded by the governor of Osaka (at the time, a woman). She had to send a male representative in her place.

On a side note, there is sumo wrestling for women, but it is treated more like a novelty in Japan, and it isn't taken very seriously.

What is the typical diet of a sumo wrestler?

It's made up out of SOUP! Yes its a fatty pork stew called Chankonabe which translates into 'Chinese Pot Stew'!

A sumo wrestler's diet:

1. Skip breakfast, go directly to work out /exercise on an empty stomach

2. Around 11-12 noon, chow down 10,000 calories of Chanko-nabe** with rice and 6 pints of beer

3. Nap for 4 hours

4. Around 6-7 pm, chow down 10,000 calories of Chanko-nabe** with rice and 6 pints of beer

5. Go to bed

This regimen of no breakfast, eating two large meals of 10,000 calories each drinking beer and sleeping after meals helps wrestlers put on excessive weight.

**Chanko-nabe is a one-pot stew with tofu, shiitake mushroom, leeks, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, fish, chicken, and beef all cooked in a boiling soup base.

How much does a sumo wrestler weigh?

In 1953, the average weight of a sumo wrestler was 317 pounds, with an average height of 5' 11''. Today's sumo practitioner is 3.2 inches taller, but 95 pounds heavier.

The traditional minimum weight a "stable" will accept a wrestler for training is 165 pounds. Even though there are no weight divisions, a 165 pound individual would be looking at years of bulking up through training and the Sumo diet to to get a more acceptable fighting weight of 250+.
