When a player is sent to redemption island they must wait until another person is voted off and sent to redemption island also. The next day both contestants must participate in a battle/challenge against each other. Whoever wins the challenge goes back to redemption island while the loser is completely voted off and sent home. The person who won the challenge must then win to each person who gets there until a merge occurs and they are able to get back in the game and compete with the others.

Russell Hantz, who has already been on three seasons of the show in two years (Survivor: Samoa '09, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains '10, and Survivor: Redemption Island '11), had declared that he was finished with the game of Survivor upon his departure from Redemption Island. However, recent interviews with Russell have shown that he is still very much invested in the game and may agree to come back again if certain requirements are met.

"If I played again, I'd be playing with all-stars," he told the AP. "I assume, and they basically hate me. They hate me because I played the game three times in a year and a half, and they're sitting at home and they want to play. They get their feelings hurt because they pick me again. If I did ever play again, I would shut my mouth."

According to an interview with Phillip Sheppard (Survivor: Redemption Island '11) on May 17th, 2011, he states that he thinks he will get back out there. "I've got a feeling that I'm going to get an invite somewhere down the road to play Survivor again."

As of June 2011, Russell Hantz and Phillip Sheppard are not scheduled to return for the 23rd season of Survivor, however, it is possible they may return again in the future.

Jerri Manthey was first considered a villain on Survivor: The Australian Outback. This was because she was often involved in conflicts and arguments with her fellow cast-mates.

Most notably from that season, was when Jerri accused Kel of eating the beef jerky. This caused a tiff between the rest of the tribe who was starving. She also went through his bag in search of the jerky, but did not find any evidence that Kel had taken it.

Phillip Sheppard has tattoos on both of his arms. He has a lion tattoo on one arm to represent ferocity and a gorilla on the other arm to represent the attitude that he will take if you mess with his country. Phillip has said, "Hell hath no fury like a lion and a gorilla when he thinks he is being provoked."

On March 2nd, 2011 Francesca was defeated on Redemption Island by Matt, and was eliminated from the game. Russell Hantz was voted out of the tribe where he will go on to face Matt in a dual on Redemption Island which he must win in order to stay in the game.
