The first mascot they had was named Skully. In fact my Dad worked with the guy that named Skully. Tampa Bay had a draw for fans and he won the privelage of naming the mascot. The new one is Captain Fear, a caricature of a pirate. Huge Bucs fan. Been reading and watching about them my whole life.
During the orange and white years, it was a buccaneer that went by the name Bruce. After the team revamped, changed uniforms, stadiums, and team colors, they also changed mascots. The more recent mascot is a more comical looking pirate that goes by the name of Captain Fear.

The Tampa Bay Rays team was created in 2008 (the year they won the pennant), however the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have been around since March 31, 1998. They have played at Tropicana Field in Saint Petersburg, Florida since the creation of the Devil Rays.

The Tampa Bay Rays won the season series against the New York Yankees with a record of 10 wins and 8 losses (10-8). The teams will not meet anymore for the 2010 regular season, but might have a chance of playing each other in the 2010 MLB playoffs.

After ten terrible seasons, the Devil Rays' management decided to shake up their image. Before the 2008 season they changed their logo, name, and team colors. They considered completely different names such as the Wave and the Thunder but decided for a softer break from the past, keeping the name that had been used as a short form of their name, while changing the focus and interpretation from scary looking fish with satanic name to something connoting sunshine and light.

In their first season with their new name, the Rays won the American League pennant. However the new name, and even the team's new success, did not bring significant numbers of extra fans to the game, as the two Florida teams remain among the least supported teams in Major League Baseball.

The first game for the Rays franchise was on March 31, 1998 against the Tigers. The Rays ended up losing the game 11-6. The first hit was a single by Dave Martinez in the bottom of the third with one out.
