Can a person die from a tarantula hawk sting?

All tarantulas are poisonous. They possess venom and can bite humans. However, although their venom is deadly to their prey, it is not deadly to humans and the venom of most species of tarantula rarely causes anything more than localised aching around the bite area. The effects are often compared to a bee or wasp sting, although some people who have been bitten by tarantulas claim it is worse than that. However, there are several death incidents caused by tarantulas. But all of them belong to people who are allergic to insect venom (note: deaths of allergic people caused by bees are much more than tarantulas).

Note that although tarantulas have big fangs, they do not bite humans unless they feel threatened. Some species of tarantula do however have really itchy hairs all over their body that they can shed all over you! This causes severe itching and irritation, and is one of the tarantula's main forms of defense.

There are many more than five senses. Some estimates put the number as high as 21, but it is generally agreed that five is the minimum. The basic five senses are touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. Others include an additional four senses to the list, which include the sense of temperature, pain, balance, and body position. A tarantula would use all of these.

How do Mexican red knee tarantulas catch their prey?

Most spiders are 'ambush predators' - preferring to wait for prey to come to them (it uses less energy). Normally, a tarantula will wait for suitable prey to come within striking distance. It then lunges forward, grabbing the prey with its front legs. Using its pedipalps, it quick manoeuvres the prey into a position where it can inject venom from its fangs. It 'impales' the victim and hold it until the venom has taken effect to immobilise it. The venom injected liquefies the preys insides, before the spider 'sucks' up the resulting 'soup' - leaving a small pellet of undigested exoskeleton behind.

Why do tarantulas eat birds?

Yes, they do. In a study in Miami, Florida, it was proven that some arachnoids (like tarantulas) do, in fact, prey on small birds. However, since hummingbirds are so quick, it is rare that a tarantula or other spider will actually catch the bird; usually, an injured or sick hummingbird is found, and the tarantula takes the bird back to its web, where it finishes the job.

Hope that was helpful!

What does a tarantula shelter look like?

A tarantulas home is technically a hole in the ground. It's good shelter because they can easily squeeze through and protect them from big predators. There are often webs surrounding the area to let other spiders know that it's taken. They can be found in the south and west parts of the USA, Central America, and down throughout South America to the southern parts of Chile, Argentina. Tarantulas can also be found throughout Africa, large parts of Asia and all over Australia. In Europe, there are some species in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Italy, and in Cyprus.

What color is the blood of a tarantula?

The blood of a tarantula is typically a pale blue color due to the presence of hemocyanin, a copper-containing molecule that functions similarly to hemoglobin in vertebrates. Hemocyanin is used for oxygen transport in the blood of many arthropods and some mollusks. This blue coloration is common in many species of spiders and other invertebrates that rely on this type of respiratory pigment.

How is a tarantula useful to humans?

Arthropods include honey and bumble bees, and flies, who take care of pollinating our crops and accounting for 66% of our food. Without them, no fruit, vegetables, coffee, cotton, vanilla, and much more.

Arthropods also include the many many species that are the natural predators of the species forming our pests. They combat their own rogues for us, free of charge, no pesticides needed if you know what you're doing and use the right predator (I've followed courses and have done some research on this, mainly about parasitoid wasps).

Also included are the crustaceans we use as food. In many countries in Asia and Africa, insects too are eaten, and other parts of the world may very well adopt this. After all, they're just crustaceans of the land, a bit smaller and with less legs, and they taste just fine (speaking from experience). They're easily kept and reared, and produce less CO2 than cows etc. Also, they're more easily digested (our ancestors probably ate more insects than cows and pigs, so we still have the enzymes to digest them better) and our gut takes up more nutrients than from regular meat (again, followed courses on this).

What is being done to preserve and save tarantulas?

Don't kill them and breed them, show other people not to be afraid of them. And don't buy anything that has to do with killing tarantulas, for example, a tarantula in a glass container with a pin through it or a shirt that says I hate tarantulas.
