Can you file your federal taxes using your last pay stub of the year?
Theoretically, you could file on January 1, XXXX, however the IRS will not accept returns that are not accompanied by all the ruequired forms. Employers, banks, etc . - everyone - who is required to report to you (and the IRS) the things you need to know (generally by providing a form 1099 or W-2) have until the end of January to do so - and these forms MUST accompany your formal tax return filing.
Some companies will give you a refund (if one is coming) using only your last pay stub and the information you provide - but they are actually doing so by giving you a loan against the expected refund, charging you very high fees for the loan and the actual filing of the return when the forms are available that one must contract with them to do. (Called a "revenue anticipation loan" or some variation).
These are LOANS and are considered predatory - a scam - because they are so expensive and many companies have been prevented (legally) from even trying to provide them under any guise.

One, your business expenses that are subtracted from the 1099-MISC income.
Two, whether you'll have to pay self-employment taxes on your net income (gross income minus expenses).
Three, other types of income that'll be included on your tax return.
Four, any adjustments, credits, or deductions (standard, itemized, etc.) that you'll claim on your return.

Does Form 1099 capture specific dates of employment?

How much income on a 1099 form before you have to report?
If you're getting a 1099, it's been reported to the IRS, so you should report it no matter how much it is to avoid being charged with tax fraud.
I think, though I may be wrong, that business are not required to file 1099 forms for payees with annual amounts under $600. (This doesn't mean they CAN'T, just that they don't HAVE to). You should consult a tax attorney for definitive advice.
You have it right....but the $600 limit applies to only certain types of payments.
Bascially those made as part of a standard business tranaction. Any over that must get a form.
Transactions like interest paid, dividends received, etc...all require 1099s
