How can you get last year's tax papers?

If you want copies of previous years' returns that you've filed, you have two options. One, file Form 4506 (Request for Copy of Tax Return) if you want an exact copy (including all attachments, W-2s, etc.). There's a fee of $57.00 for each year requested. Exact copies are available for the current year plus previous six years. It takes about two months to process the request. Two, file Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) if you want a computer printout of the information on your return (transcript). Transcripts are available for the current year plus the previous three years. There's no charge, and it takes about 10-30 days to process this request.

But if you haven't filed and are looking for last year's forms to file late, then you also have several options. One, print them online at www.irs.gov/formspubs by clicking on 'Previous Years'. Two, call 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676) to request copies. Three, write to the IRS at 1201 N. Mitsubishi Motorway, Bloomington IL 61705-6613.

What is the purpose of Form W-9?

Form W-9 is Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification. Your taxpayer identification number (TIN) is your social security number. If you're a resident alien and you're not eligible for a social security number, then use the individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) assigned to you by the IRS. If you're a sole proprietor and you have an Employer Identification Number (EIN), then you can use either your social security number or your EIN.

The purpose of Form W-9 is to provide your correct TIN to the requester (the person requesting it). The requester is required to file an information return with the IRS to report, for example, mortgage interest you paid, cancellation of debt, contributions to your IRA, real estate transactions, income paid to you, etc. In order to report this information to the IRS, the requester needs your correct TIN.

How many should you claim on your income taxes?

You should claim all the exemptions to which you're entitled. Unless you're claimed as a dependent on someone else's return, you're entitled to a personal exemption. If you're married, your spouse also claims a personal exemption. Claim one exemption for each dependent, if any. The number of exemptions is one of the items on your return that reduces the amount of your adjusted gross income (AGI).

Go to www.irs.gov/formspubs to view/print Publication 501 (Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information).

It's a form that you fill out for a person or business who's required to file information about money that you paid to them (mortgage interest, IRA contributions, etc.) or that was paid to you (income, etc.). Form W-9 verifies for the Requestor that your correct taxpayer identification number (TIN), such as social security number or employer identification number (EIN) is correct for the information being reported to the IRS.

You complete the form and return it to the Requestor. You don't file a copy with your tax return. The Requestor will provide you with the forms you need for tax return, such as 1099-MISC (Miscellaneous Income), 1098 (Mortgage Interest Statement), etc.

If you're self employed, you start with Form 1040. You also need to fill out Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business) or, if your business expenses are less than $5,000, Schedule C-EZ (Net Profit from Business). Entries from C or C-EZ go on line 12 of 2009 Form 1040.

As a self employed person, you must pay Self-Employment Tax for Social Security and Medicare. You figure this tax on Schedule SE (Self-Employment Tax). Entries from Schedule SE go on line 56 of 2009 Form 1040.

Also, don't forget that you're entitled to a credit for one-half of the Self-Employment Tax that you paid. That amount is entered on line 27 of 2009 Form 1040.

Form 1099-MISC is Miscellaneous Income. The person or business providing/sending you a 1099-MISC form considers you as self-employed, not as an employee. You'll need to file Form 1040, Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business) or Schedule C-EZ (Net Profit from Business), and if your net income is at least $400 Schedule SE (Self-Employment Tax). You don't attach Form 1099-MISC to the Form 1040.
