When do dependents have to file a tax return?

Generally, dependents have to file a tax return when their income exceeds a certain amount for their age and filing status. Single or Married Filing Jointly under 65 must file when their earned income is over $5,450 for 2008 ($5,700 for 2009). Single dependent 65 and older has to file when their earned income is over $6,800 for 2008 ($7,100 for 2009). Married Filing Jointly 65 and older must file when their earned income is over $6,500 for 2008 ($6,800 for 2009).

There are also filing requirements based on unearned income and gross income. There are also four other conditions which require a dependent to file a tax return, including having net earnings from self-employment of at least $400.00 and receiving advance earned income credit payments from your employer.

Should minor making 3000.00 do you have to file federal state taxes?

There are no special tax rules for minors.

Whether the minor needs to file federal taxes depends on the source of the income (earned?, unearned?, self-employment?) and whether the minor can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return (like his parents). I presume the minor is not married, but in some states a minor can marry.

See Tables 1, 2, and 3 on pages 2, 3, and 4 of Publication 501 to determine if you are required to file a federal return:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p501.pdf

State tax rules vary by state. In some states, the minimum income can be quite small, like Pennsylvania where it is just $33.

Tax Form 1040 can you use negative amounts?

Yes, unless the instructions for the specific line say not to.

Enclose negative amounts in parentheses.

Who should claim the tuition expenses for a 17-year-old who is filing Single and being claimed as a dependent on the parents' tax return?

If your parents are claiming you as a dependent, then they're the only ones who can claim a deduction for tuition expenses. If they don't claim that deduction, then neither you nor anyone else can claim it because of your status as a dependent claimed on someone else's return.

There are two options for deducting tuition expenses, and the person claiming the deduction should choose the one that gives the lower tax. One, Form 8917 (Tuition and Fees Deduction) is attached to your tax return (1040 or 1040A). The deduction on line 6 of Form 8917 is then entered on line 19 of the Adjusted Gross Income Section of 1040/1040A. Two, Form 8863 (Education Credits Hope and Lifetime Learning Credits) is attached to your return. The deduction is then entered on line 31 of 1040A or line 49 of 1040.

What part of Form W-2 do you attach and send with the 1040EZ form?

W-2 is Wage and Tax Statement. Your employer is required to give you at least three copies of your W-2 form. Copy B is labelled 'To Be Filed With Employee's FEDERAL Tax Return'. No matter which of the 1040 series you're using (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ), you attach Copy B to that return.

What is a schedule C?

Schedule C is used to report profit or loss from business.

What is the deadline for a 1040x tax form?

There is no deadline. However after a certain point you won't be eligible for a refund or to make certain elections. And after a certain point, the IRS may not be able to collect on a non-fraudulent error you made, but you are welcome to pay anyway just in case you are being considered for a cabinet position.

If you did something fraudulent and want to come clean, it is best to get the 1040X filed before the IRS starts investigating.

If you forgot to claim a deduction, you have until three years after the original due date of the return (assuming you filed on time and didn't make any payments after the due date). You have seven years to claim a worthless security or a bad debt.

If you want to recharacterize an IRA contribution or take a corrective distribution, you have until the extended due date of your return (assuming you filed on time or filed an extension on time).

If you want to switch from a joint return to a separate return, the deadline is the original due date of your return.

There are a lot of different deadlines for a lot of different problems. You are always free to file, but it may or may not do you any good.

File 1040ez form online?

You can find tax preparation services that will allow you to file Form 1040EZ online through the IRS's free file site:

http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

Important: Most of these services are free only if you go through the IRS's web site each and every time you want to access them. If you start a return and want to go back to it later, make sure you go through the IRS web site.

Because of politics, the IRS is not allowed to provide online filing services to the general public. You must use a private company if you want to file online. The web site above links to private companies that have agreed to provide limited free filing services to certain groups of people. They may charge extra for filing state returns. Hint: Many states have free direct filing available at their web sites.

Do you need to send copies of your w2s with your tax forms?

With your federal return, yes.

With your state return, see the instructions. But if in doubt, you won't get into any trouble for doing it.

But get your taxes filed or at least an extension today even if you can't find your W-2 forms. If you file without your W-2 forms, the IRS will send you a letter later asking you to send them in.

Do minors sign 1040 tax form?

If they are old enough to write and understand what they are doing, they can sign their own return.

If not, the parent should sign the parent's name and write underneath it "as parent of minor child."

Filing Form 944 is by invitation only from the IRS. The form is designed to reduce the burden of reporting and submitting required tax withholding/payments (income, Medicare, Social Security) by small employers. Any employer who believes that they are eligible for Form 944 should contact the IRS at 1-800-829-4933. For more information, go online at www.irs.gov/formspubs. Select Form and Instruction Number. Type 944 in the Find box to print Instructions for Form 944.

Also, go online at www.irs.gov/taxtopics. Select Topic 757 to print Topic 757- Form 941 and 944 Deposit Requirements.

How do you obtain employee 1099 tax form?

Form 1099-MISC is Miscellaneous Income. The business where you work provides you with Form 1099-MISC (instead of Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement) when they consider you as self-employed, NOT an employee. Employers are required to provide/send 1099-MISC and W-2 forms by January 31st. If January 31st falls on a weekend, then the deadline is extended to the next business day. You should contact the business directly if you haven't received Form 1099-MISC by that deadline. If the business fails to provide it to you by mid-February, then you should contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
