The Books of Ember Series

In 'The People of Sparks' (the Second Book of Ember) three characters travel to a "great city" located on an enormous bay by the ocean. It is also mentioned that it rains during Winter, but there is no mention of snow. By these two clues I think we can safely assume that Ember's hill/cave and the town of Sparks are near San Francisco.

The message - the completely deciphered code - is a message to all the citizens telling them how to escape for themselves. One of the ladies in Ember, named Mrs. Murdo, who was taking care of Lina and Poppy, finds the message at the end of the book, and it is discovered in the 2nd book, the People of Sparks, that Mrs. Murdo tells the mayor, but the mayor does not announce it. The mayor and his guards are then found in the Pipeworks trying to escape alone, but because the mayor is obese, the boat tips over and the mayor and his guards drown.

Ember was very angry at her parents and a few days later she goes to her grave to see them, and they are pray to her and she didn't see they were there. She couldn't be entrusted on her doing, and she was very, very, very angry and she thought to herself to kill them. She goes to her house everyday and made a fire there and when she died she was air and other times she would turn into a fire and when she was fire she remember what had happened on that fateful. She was going to be very angry and she was going to be a ghost with Danny phantom on Nickelodeon.
