What is the year the boy in the striped pajamas set in?

The exact year is not given, but a German soldier implies when he's speaking with Father that the time period is after 1942.

The father, Ralf, is based on Rudolf Höss, the first commandant of Auschwitz. Still, the book is fictional with some historical points.

In the beginning of the novel, a soldier implies it was set during 1942.

On May 1, 1940, Höss became the commandant at Auschwitz.

In June 1941, he started the gassing.

The book says "a year later after moving", therefore, it in 1942, Höss wife found out about the gas chambers. (fact)

It also states months (years?) after the fictional Bruno dies, The Last Chapter states Höss was captured, and then was later hanged. (the book never mentions this)

The beginning of the book is set in Berlin, Germany; and the rest (majority) is Auschwitz.

ALSO, it states Bruno and Shmuel are 9 and their birthday was in 1934, making the year around 1942/1943; depending on if they have had their birthday.

What does the boy in striped pajamas symbolize?

It represents the imaginary barrier between the two different worlds that the two boys belonged too. It was the crossing point from a life of privilege to a life of torment and confinement. It represented the irony in the fact that a simple object such as a fence could separate 2 completely different lives.

The fence could also represent something that brought hope towards the future. The boys were able to be themselves around it, even with their differences. It guided them towards friendship even though they were raised to be enemies.

What is the background of the boy in the striped pajamas?

Well, in the book a boy named Bruno lives in Berlin and is the son of a high standing SS soldier. The Feurer (Hitler) or Fury as the little boy calls him comes to visit and has dinner with his parents and this is when it is decided that the family will move to Poland to live outside the Death Camp of Auschwitz, the boy can't quite pronounce it right and calls it Out-With. The boy notices out his window all the little huts and the people in "stripped pajamas". Later on his sister tells him that they are Jews. The boy becomes terribly bored and starts to walk near the wall of the camp. He comes to a spot and sits down and he begins to see someone walking towards him. This is how he meets the boy in stripped pajamas, or shmuel. They meet almost everyday except for when it rains. They sit and talk the whole time they visit and Bruno wishes they could play. After about a year of living at Auschwitz Bruno and his sister get lice and Bruno's head is shaved. Bruno comes to notice how alike him and Shmuel look now that both of their heads are shaved, but Shmuel tells him that he can't find his father and the boys devise a plan. Bruno will come the next day and sneak under the fence and help Shmuel find his father, Shmuel will bring him stripped clothes to wear. While in the camp the two boys come upon a march and a selection. They are selected and I infer that they were taken to a gas chamber. Bruno's father begins to worry and when all hope is lost he walks the line of the fence and finds that the fence is lose in one place, where a small boy could crawl under. He also finds Bruno's clothes that he left when he changed into his stripped pajamas.
