The plot for The Cay is, One morning in spring 1942, U-boats from the German Navy attack tankers bringing oil from Lake Maracaibo in nearby Venezuela to Cura?ao and its refineries. Life on the island, which had been somewhat idyllic despite the war, begins to change as the U-boat remains offshore and no shipping will come without a naval escort, which the U.S. cannot yet provide.

He decides to find some sticks and start a fire for the airplane to see the smoke signal and also he wrote on the sand "HELP" with sticks. But the problem in the book later on is that their smoke was white and the airplanes thought that it was low cloud and kept flying, because they needed black smoke. I really hope I helped :)
