Revelation 12:9 says "So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him." Notice this scripture is written in a past tense form?

Satan was upset over the bones of Moses because as far as he understood God was breaking the rules. The rule God set up was that there is no remission of sin without the payment for sin. How could God take mosses to heaven if the penalty of sin hadn't been made yet ? What Satan and the unelect didn't understand was that the penalty had been paid before the foundations of the world. In other words the elect were for known. That's how Jesus could tell the thief that he would be with Him in paradise. That's why Jesus's body saw no corruption and that is why Jesus was not in the tomb for 3 days. He clearly paid the penalty for sin from before the foundations of the world were ever created.

Jews continue to see Satan as the loyal assistant of God, rather than as the devil of Christianity. In Christianity, Satan evolved to become the evil opponent of God, seeking to cause the faithful to deviate from righteousness and to destroy God's kingdom. Satan continued to evolve throughout much of the Middle Ages, but the more the Church portrayed the devil as a repulsive being, usually either black or red and with horns and a tail, the more the common people made him a figure of fun in order to alleviate their fear of him. As a figure of fun, the devil became known as Old Nick.

I have worked with him but it was not a great experience. He is all play no work. I mean how difficult is it to sit down and just discuss something. I had an appointment that I had to miss because he would not stop talking about how awesome torturing people is, and how awesome hell is. On that note God is all work, no play. I like it sometimes, but other times just relax dude. I personally like taking souls to heaven though. I have to listen to so much crap when people go to hell. They actually try to bargain with me. I don't control it, I just do what I'm told.

Short answer: Pride.

Long answer: From what I understand, the devil was first called Lucifer, the highest of all of God's angels. He was created perfect, like the other angels and like men. Also like men, the angels were given free will. So Lucifer decided that he was not content being the highest angel, he wanted to be God himself. It was this pride that ultimately led to him being cast out of Heaven as a fallen angel, along with the other angels that he had convinced to join him, ultimately to go to Hell.

Regardless of the origin, the devil promotes sin in the world, not only the glaring sins like murder, but the equally bad sins of lust and envy, which are pretty much commonplace these days. He sows discord and detachment from God, which leads other people to Hell, and for things like this he is found deserving of going to Hell.
