The Great Gatsby

Gatsby has become very close friends with Nick sharing his most intimate secrets. It is no surprise that Nick stands up and takes care of Gatsby just as he knows Gatsby would have done for him; but in truth and fact, it was Nick he trusted more than anyone else. He was like family. And the guest, the only most important guest is Gatsby's poor father.

Gatsby's desire to regain what he once had

On her wedding day, Daisy comes close to calling off her marriage to Tom. This was because she received a letter from Gatsby, with whom she'd had a love affair. Jordan knows this because she was part of the wedding party and witnessed Daisy's little meltdown.

I'm pretty sure her name was Pam, but they called her Pammy.

West Egg, where Gatsby lived, represented "new money," or those who had just recently become wealthy, thus, the extravagance of Gatsby's tastes and parties. East Egg symbolized more of the old wealth, with the more fine-tuned classic tastes and pace of life. The valley of ashes represented the moral decay in America. In fact, it is interesting to note that the bright blue eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg are located in this valley. It can symbolize a divine being (i.e. God) looking down upon a wasteland in which people were not honorable or responsible. In addition, on a larger geographic level, the western U.S., where the narrator (Nick Carraway) was from, represented the more traditional and respectable American dream, which was the pursuit of true happiness. Whereas, the eastern U.S. symbolized the amoral search for a false American dream, pure financial success whether or not at the expense of others.

The cover artwork was a controversial piece in it's time because of the naked woman pictured in the eyes. The eyes are meant to represent Dr. J T Eckleburgs, the eyes on the billboard by Mr. Wilson's shop. Color is represented throughout the book, so the colored lights at the bottom might represent that.

Gatsby's mansion in "The Great Gatsby" is a grand and opulent estate located on Long Island in the fictional West Egg. The mansion is where Jay Gatsby hosts extravagant parties in the hopes of reuniting with Daisy Buchanan, the love of his life. The mansion symbolizes Gatsby's wealth and his attempt to win back Daisy's love.

Daisy feels secure with Tom - this is the reason she married him in the first place. Gatsby used to be a nobody and Daisy moved on to Tom because of his wealth, stability, and the approval of her parents. She is considering leaving Tom for Gatsby, but is unsure of their future together. Meanwhile, Myrtle Wilson is killed and Gatsby offers to take the blame for it in order to exonerate Daisy who ran her over. Because both Tom and Daisy's lovers are out of the way, they make amends and act like they were never unfaithful. As is a prominent theme throughout the book; Tom and Daisy both leave others to clean up the messes they make because they think their money gives them the power to do so.

He hides his feelings due to both were married, so he wanted to be between her friends, only to see her.

Jordan does not believe Gatsby attended Oxford because she is skeptical of his claims due to his mysterious background and the inconsistencies in his stories. Additionally, Gatsby's lack of proof or evidence to support his claim further fuels Jordan's doubt.

The title of the book "The Great Gatsby" comes from the character Nick Caraway in the story and is in reference to the character 'Jay Gatsby'. Jay Gatsby is 'great' because he manages to live a life of happiness and optimism simply by convincing himself that life is full of hope and goodness and by ignoring the corruption and darkness in the world around him. This makes him great because few people are able to ignore the bad things in life and focus only the good. F. Scott Fitzgerald meant to make the title ironic because although Gasby is great he is also fake and impossible. The character called 'Jay Gatz' changed his name to 'Jay Gatsby' in order to make himself the perfect persona for the woman he loved (Daisy). When he changed his name he made himself from being an ordinary person into this almost super-human bundle of optimism and hope who strives for perfection in everything. Because of this he started to believe his own lies and couldn't invision a way that Daisy would be able to reject him (to the extent that he blanks out the fact that she's married!). Ultimately this means that when Daisy does reject him the character of 'Jay Gatsby' falls apart and only Jay Gatz is left. He then symbolically dies to show that after the creation of 'Jay Gatsby', 'Jay Gatz' can no longer survive in the real world. Long story short, it's called "The Great Gatsby" because Gatsby is great. Gatsby is great because he is larger than life in his optimism. This is ironic because it is this optimism that ultimately kills him.

by rejecting the formal structures of writing

Gatsby tells Nick that he was the son of a wealthy mid-west family. He says that all of his family had died and he inherited his wealth from them. He also tells Nick that he attended Oxford and collected jewels.

When Nick meets Gatsby standing in front of Daisy's house after the accident, the conversation goes like this (quoting exactly): Nick asks "'Was Daisy driving?' [Gatsby says] 'Yes,' he said after a moment, 'but of course I'll say I was. You see, when we left New York she was very nervous and she though it would steady her to drive'".

They are highly destructive with their wealth.

The reporter wants information about Gatsby's personal life, background, and wealth to publish a story in the newspaper. He is curious about Gatsby's mysterious persona and the extravagant parties he hosts.

She insists that they both hate who they're married to. she claims that the reason they aren't together is because Daisy is catholic and doesn't believe in divorce. Nick, however, knows that this is not true.

He thinks of Daisy in terms of money because of her place in the social class hierarchy. She is at the top, a part of East egg, a part of "old money." He sees her as the green light across the bay, which symbolizes wealth, and class. He wants to reach the same status as her.

Jay Gatz's childhood schedule, filled with self-improvement activities and a strong desire to succeed, influenced the adult Gatsby's relentless pursuit of wealth and status to win back his lost love, Daisy. The disciplined routine instilled in him a sense of ambition and determination that stayed with him into adulthood, driving his extravagant lifestyle and the lengths he went to in order to achieve his goals.

The idea that everyone's actions are under scrutiny

Nick is particularly taken with Gatsby and considers him a great figure. He sees both the extraordinary quality of hope that Gatsby possesses and his idealistic dream of loving Daisy in a perfect world. Though Nick recognizes Gatsby's flaws the first time he meets him, he cannot help but admire Gatsby's brilliant smile, his romantic idealization of Daisy, and his yearning for the future. The private Gatsby who stretches his arms out toward the green light on Daisy's dock seems somehow more real than the vulgar, social Gatsby who wears a pink suit to his party and calls everyone "old sport." Nick alone among the novel's characters recognizes that Gatsby's love for Daisy has less to do with Daisy's inner qualities than with Gatsby's own. That is, Gatsby makes Daisy his dream because his heart demands a dream, not because Daisy truly deserves the passion that Gatsby feels for her. Further, Gatsby impresses Nick with his power to make his dreams come true---as a child he dreamed of wealth and luxury, and he has attained them, albeit through criminal means. As a man, he dreams of Daisy, and for a while he wins her, too. In a world without a moral center, in which attempting to fulfill one's dreams is like rowing a boat against the current, Gatsby's power to dream lifts him above the meaningless and amoral pleasure-seeking of New York society. In Nick's view, Gatsby's capacity to dream makes him "great" despite his flaws and eventual undoing.

In "The Great Gatsby," Catherine testifies at the trial about the hit-and-run incident involving Myrtle Wilson. She denies knowing anything significant about the incident, protecting her lover, Tom Buchanan, from implication. Her testimony reflects her loyalty to Tom and her willingness to cover up the truth to protect him.
