We all know that sacrifices have to be made, especially when it comes to book-to-film adaptations, to keep a movie close to 120 minutes. How closely do you think the movie The Maze Runner follows the book? I'm extremely pleased with how it's turned out. I consulted on the script and have been involved with the process from the beginning, so I felt like Fox and director Wes Ball really treated the source material with huge respect. I fully support the changes made and feel that they make a lot of sense. Everything remains true to the spirit of the book. Every character is there, every major scene, and it begins and ends like the first book in the series. I feel so fortunate to have had such an immensely positive experience.

SUMMARY- When Thomas arrives in the box, his only memory is his first name. He can remember basic things, but not anything about his past. He arrives to the Glade, which is to be his new home. There are lots of other boys there who call themselves the Gladers, and have the same wiped memory as Thomas. The Glade is a large area of land surrounded by four walls with four doors that open each day and close each night. Outside of the massive stone walls exists a large maze which the boys have been trying to solve for two years, with no success. Each night, the walls of the maze positions, creating a great challenge. Making an even greater challenge, getting stuck in the maze when the doors close is unthinkable - at night, dangerous creatures called Grievers roam around. If a Griever stings a boy, there is a chance of death, unless he receives a special medicine called Serum. Upon taking the Serum, he will undergo the 'Changing', which is a painful process that results in the return of some memories. Every month, the Gladers receive one new boy, and Thomas was part of this pattern. However, the pattern was broken when a girl, Theresa, arrived the day after Thomas. She carried with her a note saying that she was the last one to arrive at the Glade, and that everything was going to change. Soon, Theresa and Tom discover that they can speak telepathically. Many other weird things have started to occur as well, and as they seemed to have arrived with Thomas, he becomes the one the boys blame. Each Glader has a job to do around the glade. One of the most important groups is the runners. These boys run in the maze every day, looking for and remembering the changes that have occurred. Then, when the return to the Glade, they draw a map of the day's maze, in hopes to find a pattern or clue. Thomas becomes a runner, and one day he helps to discover a mysterious area off the cliff that the Grievers disappear into and come out of. They name this the 'Griever Hole', and are very curious about it. With so many strange things going on, Thomas decides he needs some answers. To do this, he requirements his memories, so he decides to purposefully get stung by a Griever. After going through the Changing, Thomas realizes why they are there, and that they must escape. He finally understands how to solve the maze. He looks carefully at the maps of the maze, and traces them onto wax paper. When they stack up the maps of all the sections from each day, they see a letter. They soon realize that the maze has been spelling out a code that repeats over and over. Thomas then tells the Gladers his plan of escape: he thinks that they need to jump through the Griever hole in order to get out of the maze. Most boys go along with his plan, but some decide to stay behind. Those who want to escape enter the maze and head towards the cliff. Many Grievers are waiting for them, and an epic battle occurs. Thomas, Theresa and Chuck (Thomas' friend) manage to jump into the hole. Theresa goes straight to the computer and enters in the code, but the last word, PUSH, will not register. Chuck, however, saves the day by a spotting a big red button that Theresa pushes, and the Grievers are shut down. The remaining living Gladers enter the hole, and they go through a door that leads them to meet the creators of the maze. Chuck is murdered by Gally, a former Glader who had mysteriously disappeared. During the chaos, a large group of people arrives who claim they are there to rescue the Gladers. The boys follow them, and learn that the world is in a catastrophe, destroyed by sun flares, and most of the population is infected with a disease called the Flare and have gone crazy. WICKED is a group that made the maze for the purpose of saving human kind, but the group that rescued the boys disagree with WICKED's motives. The Gladers are given shelter and food, and finally feel peaceful. However when they wake up, the craziness will begin again. In the epilogue, the head of WICKED writes a letter describing how well Group A's Maze Trials have gone, and that they will be given one night of rest before the next challenge begins.

THEMES- Friendship- The Gladers are all very close, and count on each other when things get tough. When Thomas joins the group, he is welcomed by most and makes strong friendships. Chuck in particular shows the true meaning of friendship. He is kind to Thomas from the moment Thomas entered the Glade, and a strong bond was made between them. Then, near the end of the book, Chuck sacrifices himself for Thomas, jumping in front of him and taking the knife. He dies out of love for his friend. Persistence- After two whole years of living in the Glade, the Gladers have not given up. They continue to search the maze, determined that there is a way out. They have a great system set up with jobs for everyone, and they keep it going through all the difficulties. They never sit around doing nothing, waiting for something to happen. Environment- In this novel, the world has been destroyed and is in horrible shape. The reader will learn the importance of keeping the world healthy and safe, to avoid such a disaster! Bravery- The Gladers are all incredibly brave, having gone through many, many scary and strange things. By the end of the book, the Gladers who are left are all extremely courageous to make it so far, although many boys who did not make it to the end were equally as brave. Chuck, for example, demonstrated a heroic act by sacrificing himself for Thomas. All the boys who were killed in the battle with the Grievers were also very courageous to fight the evil creatures. The Necessity of Structure in Society- From the beginning, the original Gladers immediately set up an organized, structured society, everyone assigned a job in order to get things done. This shows that even when humans are forced to start from scratch, our need for order is strong.

What is the maze runner about?

User Avatar
it's about a boy named Thomas who wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learned to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies from below. A new boy arrives every 30 days. The original group has been in "the glade" for two years, trying to find a way to escape through a maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun to give up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change. There are some great, fast-paced action scenes, particularly those involving the nightmarish Grievers who plague the boys. Thomas is a likable protagonist who uses the information available to him and his relationships (including his ties to the girl, Teresa) to lead the Gladers. I like this book a lot. Shorter Summary With Fewer Details: Maze Runner is about a boy named Thomas who wakes up in an elevator shaft type thing, and, when the doors open, finds himself in a new world with no memory of anything except his name. Then a girl, the first girl there, arrives in the same fashion, but triggers "the end", and the world inside the Glade (as they call it) is ending.

What happens at the end of maze runner?

User Avatar
The kids got out, but only 20 of them, including Thomas, Teresa, Newt, Minho, and Frypan. Anyways, after running through the maze (most of the gladers dying or not going in the first place), Chuck saves the day by thinking of pushing a button that enters the words that Thomas typed (the last word was push, as in 'push the button, not type the word'. Anyways, they get out and adults are watching them... the employees of WICKED I guess... Then Gaily throws a knife at Thomas (I think the adults made him or actually had physical control over him) but Chuck takes it for him. Chuck dies in Thomas' arms, and Thomas severely Injures the murderer with his own hands. Someone kills the woman watching them (Rescuers who say that he company WICKED is evil and they "kidnap" them.) and they help the kids escape onto a bus, that proceeds to run over someone. Then the kids go to some building and eat or sleep or something. Teresa is separated from them.
