Did the little girl die after the sound of music?

It is not clear from your query if you meant an actress or as part of the story. There were several female children in S.O.M. Nobody ( among lead characters) actually died in the play or the film- the Father was recalled by the Navy department for active duty- In real life he was a Submarine officer- a specially trained man vital for the Kriegsmarine. The drama introduced the subject matter of wartime separation angst- here in a Family, not a boyfriend-girlfriend setting, which was unusual for the time. S.O.M. was blazing up the stages at the time of the Berlin Crisis in the Cold War, so an antiwar theme was unusual-also from the Axis side. Closest Yank paralell was Glenn Miller- who went MIA and presumed dead in ETO. Killing off a little girl in a musical (comedy) that had little comedy to begin with- well it just was not done! SOM did develope a thougtful anti-war message without gunplay, dead bodies, or air-raid sirens, etc.

Why is The Sound of Music broadcast around Christmas?

I'm not sure exactly, especially since the movie is set during the summer. It's most likely because of the religious tones in the movie, what with Maria being a postulant at Nonnburg Abbey in the beginning. Along with the religious morals and values the film is safe for people of any age to watch and it's a family movie, good for people getting together for the holiday season without showing all the commercialized Christmas spirit of most Christmas movies.
