The Three Stooges

The Three Stooges began in the "Ted Healy and his Southern Gentlemen" show and included Healy with the three 'Horwitz' brothers: young Moe Howard, his brother, Shemp Howard, and Larry Fine. In 1958, comic actor Joe DeRita, who looked remarkably like Curly, became known as "Curly Joe." Through the 1960s, television made The Three Stooges into stars. The Three Stooges' antics continue today in syndicated television programs.

Technically, it was Emil Sitka who was scheduled to take over for Larry when he passed in January, 1975. But Moe fell ill to lung cancer and passed in April, 1975 and Sitka never got to play with the Stooges. He was a role player in many Stooges two-reel shorts of the 1940s and 1950s. He passed away in 1998.

Moe Howard - 1897-1975

Larry Fine - 1902-1975

Curly Howard - 1903-1952

Shemp Howard - 1895-1955

Joe Besser - 1907-1988

Curly Joe DeRita - 1909-1993

Joe Palma - 1905-1994*

Emil Sitka - 1914-1998

* - Shemp passed away with four two-reel shorts left in the contract. Joe Palma stepped in and 'played' Shemp for those four shorts. At the end of the contract Joe Besser was signed to become the third Stooge.

What three stooges episode are they married in a prison?

In the Sweet Pie and Pie

The Stooges are in prison awaiting hanging at the same time three sisters are needing to be married within 48 hours to get their father's $10 million inheritance. The sisters don't really want to be married, they just want the money. So their lawyer comes up with a plan ... they marry three convicts today that will be hanged tomorrow. They like that idea and go to the prison and marry the Stooges.

When the Stooges are going to be hanged, the ropes break after the trap doors open and all fall to the ground. While on the ground, the warden comes up to them with a telegram from the Governor that says someone else has admitted to the crime and the Stooges are free men.

They find the sisters and move in with them. After a while the sisters talk to their lawyer and tell him he's got to get them out of the marriages. He comes up with a plan to throw a swanky party where the Stooges will certainly embarrass them and they will be able to annul the marriages. They like this idea and agree to it.

The party turns into a pie throwing event, started by the lawyer when he pays off the butler to trip while carrying a big cake and smush the cake into Moe's face. No one is spared from wearing the goo. A senator is talking to one of the sisters ... "As a rule, parties bore me but I know I'm gonna get a bang out of this one!" ... WHAM! ... a pie right in the chops. A guy is talking to another woman and one of the sisters about his hunting trip ... "I raised my rifle and FIRED!" ... WHAM!

The lawyer, who left the room after paying off the butler, comes out and sees the fracas and yells at the Stooges and slaps them across their pie covered faces. The sisters tell the lawyer that his scheme worked perfectly and each one throws a pie in his face. The short ends with all the guests throwing pies at the lawyer.

What children's rhyme also became the theme song for the Three Stooges?

I heard it being played by billy-bob thorton in the period piece "The Alamo". So if it was even a remotely accurate, I assume it's older than the stooges. To update the info that I previously entered, the name of the song is "Listen to the Mockingbird" by Winner, Septimus (Hawthorne, Alice).Philadelphia: Winner & Shuster, 1855. It being written in 1855 and the battle of the Alamo being fought in 1836 makes it a bit suspect but tunes of that era were played throughout the country before finally being written down for posterity. It can be heard WITH THE ORIGINAL LYRICS @ http://lincoln.lib.niu.edu/Songs/mockingbird.html ---- The theme song is "Three Blind Mice"! It is/was a nursery rhyme written in 1609 by English composer Thomas Ravenscroft in 1609. Earlier, the other thyme song, "Pop Goes the Weasel", was used. ----
