Finding a girlfriend is pretty easy - Marines can say what they want, but the old saying is that "A Sailor has a girl in every port", not a Marine. Ladies love sailors, God Bless them.

However, KEEPING ONE is the hard part, given the long separations that sailors deal with. It's one reason divorce rates are pretty high in the Navy. Just about every one of my old buddies I served with has been divorced at least once; I'm the rare exception, having been married almost 30 years. My situation is a bit unique though - my wife was a Sailor too, which is how we met. It was a lot easier for her to understand the stress of Navy life than it is for most close friends and dependents.

Computers of all types are used in the Navy for large numbers of things. Data for supply and logistics is a major use. Personnel and pay records are maintained and stored in computers. Computers are used to target weapons systems in conjunction with radar and sonar. Communications is almost entirely run through computer systems.

Let's see... computers at that point in time were mostly used by the military for artillery applications. However some computers were being used for research purposed by universities at that time. An example that I remember was a computer called ENAIC, which dimmed the lights everytime it was turned on. I don't remember when, but a computer was also used to predict the winner of a presidential election back in the day.

Coming from the Spartan side of things, we've always been rivals. When the State of Michigan wanted to create and agricultural college, the University of Michigan fought against it (despite the fact that the school was near failure - obviously, they bounced back). U of M also voted against Michigan State's entry into the Big Ten (then the Western Conference) in 1953 and against it becoming a University in 1955. The Paul Bunyan trophy, the rivalry trophy in football, was created in 1953. And let's just say things have gotten worse on the MSU side, who is tired of being outshined by U of M despite the fact that we, too, are one of the best universities in the world.
