What are some velociraptor adaptations?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Velociraptor was noctournal, which was an adaptation to cope with the heat in the desert. They were agile and fast, which helped them to escape threats and also to catch prey. The third major adaptation of Velociraptor was its sickle claw on each foot. They used their sickle claws to stab prey like Protoceratops in the throat and thus kill it for food.

Where did the velociraptor live and where were the fossils found?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Velociraptor lived in what is now Mongolia and north-central China between 75 and 71 million years ago. There area was a desert at the time, complete with vast areas of sand dunes and frequent sandstorms. Life was sustained by scattered creeks, which would be surrounded by vegetation. Plants were sparse except near sources of water, where there would be oases. Types of plants include conifers, cycads, ginkgoes, ferns, horsetails, and early angiosperms, such as primitive grasses and palm trees.

Modern consensus states that the velociraptor lived in Eastern Asia. This would suggest that there would have been no need for swimming, due to the fact that Eastern Asia is mostly plains and desert.

What kind of food did the velociraptor eat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There was only one predator that lived at the same time and place as Velociraptor and was more formidable. It is only known from fragmentary remains, but it may be Alectrosaurus. Alectrosaurus was a 17 foot long tyrannosaur. Velociraptor would probably do its best to steer clear of them.

How fast could a velociraptor run?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A 'dinosaur'? This question can't be answered there are hundreds of different dinosaur species, some had flexible, short, long or muscular legs. Some dinosaurs like utahraptor were really fast comparing to a dimetrodon (but dimetrodon wasn't a dinosaur its a prehistoric reptile) And what type of prey is it? An apatosaurus? Or a fabrosaurus..? Again they run at a different speed. (As far as i know an apatosaurus could break its legs if it would have tried to run because of its heaviness)

How long is a velociraptor tail?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Velociraptor (and all other 'raptor' dinosaurs, for that matter) had long, stiff tails for balance while runnig. These small, slender dinosaurs could reach speeds of nearly 40 mph. They needed a balance mechanism, or they would simply fall flat on their face (snout?) when they reached such speeds.

Did Velociraptor hunt in packs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, but only the males hunt in packs, the females would rather hunt alone. Because the females are larger and more aggressive than the males.

If they indeed did hunt at all. New evidence shows that T-Rex actually did not hunt at all, instead they more likely scavenged already deceased creatures. Sometimes, in a rare situation, a T-Rex could have killed an injured, sick, or disabled creature, but because of their high center of gravity and small forearms, they wouldn't be able to run fast enough to catch a smaller animal or dinosaur without falling over.

How deadly is a velociraptor?

How does a velociraptor protect itself?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Velociraptors when threatened would most likely give a threat display involving loud noises and gesticulations emphasizing its claws and teeth. If alone, a velociraptor would probably flee if the danger did not abate after the threat display. However, velociraptors lived in packs much like the wolves of today, and so a velociraptor would generally always be in a position to call its pack-mates to its defense. A pack of velociraptors would defend itself by encircling an aggressor and making sychronised and lightning fast attacks at its sides. In single combat while vying for position within the pack, a velociraptor would probably attack opponents only in non-vital areas and cease fighting long before either raptor was seriously injured. These conclusions are drawn from the morphology of velociraptors, their known lifestyle based on fossil footprints and toothmarks on other fossils, and comparison with similar animals of today. These conclusion may very well be incorrect as no one has ever seen a velociraptor.

The largest known species of dromaeosaur is Utahraptor. Utahraptor lived in North America about 126 million years ago. They were up to 23 feet in length, tipping the scales at about 1,000 pounds. Some unstudied specimens suggest that they could get even larger.

How many Velociraptors in a pack?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no fossil evidence that suggests that Velociraptor lived in packs. Some other raptors may have, however. Most likely Velociraptor was solitary, perhaps because the thinly spread resources of the desert make it more difficult to live in groups.
