How do thick whiskers help the walrus?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Whiskers allow animals to gather information on their environment even if they cannot see. One obvious benefit to whiskers is that they give immediate feedback on the size of a space relative to the size of the animal allowing the animal to determine if an openning can be navigated without getting struck.

Whiskers also act to protect an animal's head and eyes.

If the walrus killed you, and then was hungry, it probably would eat you. Haha.

Why do walruses have a layer of fat around their bodies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Walrus live in very cold water with ice. The blubber acts as a store of energy and also fat is a good insulator and traps heat inside the Walrus' body. This keeps them warm.

Note, many marine mammals (whales, seals etc.) also use blubber in this way.

Walruses live in the cool Arctic climates and can be found in great numbers in the Pacific & Atlantic Ocean areas around the Arctic. Good population of Pacific Walruses can be found near Bering Strait, Eastern Siberia, Alaska etc. The Atlantic population can be found in the Canadian Arctic, Greenland and even Russia. An isolated population of Walruses are also known to inhabit the Laptev Sea. They prefer shallow waters due to their limited diving abilities. They can be found in areas where their favorite prey "clams" are found in good numbers.

Why are walruses fat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Walruses are fat because the blubber helps with cold temperatures and also if you've watched videos with polar bears and walruses, it helps protect them from the bears claws and teeth and also from attacks from other walrus tusks. walruses swim in frigid cold waters so having an extra layer would be helpful.
