Why do deer eat with their tails up?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The flash of the White Tail is a warning to other deer that danger is present. Deer will allso "snort" "wheeze" and stomp the ground. If a deer senses something is close but can not smell it or is unsure- it will snort or stomp the ground to get a response. The tail is a perfect sign- bright white can be seen from a long way in the forest.

How many doe can a buck mate in a year?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The answer is two fold. It depends on the available Does and the Bucks physical condition. A Buck will continuously mate as many times as possible. During the "Rut" the Buck must find the Does-fight rival Bucks-and mate. This takes a tremendous toll on his physical condition. Bucks will loose between 1/4 to 1/3 of their body weight during this time as he is genetically motivated to mate and not eat. So there is no accurate answer other than as many times as possible. It is my understanding and from watching Bucks in the field- that some will loose so much body weight and strength that they may not survive a harsh winter following the Rut.

How long is the estrous cycle of a whitetail doe?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A deer's estrous cycle happens around the second week after the autumnal equinox, which is a fancy way of saying two weeks after the start of the fall season, or Autumn. Usually around the 2nd to 3rd week of October, this cycle will usually begin, and last through a month to 6 weeks. The reason I say six weeks, is because there are some deer out there that have a later blooming cycle. Altogether, this is the Rut season, and you can use the moon phases, and estrous cycle to tune in when you need to be in the woods for your best chances. During this time, the deer set off scents to one another to let each other know they are ready for some action, and really the only time during the season when deer that are not baited by feeders are at a disadvantage in the woods, because they can be manipulated into searching human made areas of interest. All in all, you can bet on a deer's cycle lasting around 4-6 weeks, and when it happens every year. It's just something in nature that sets them off. Hope that helps, but there are several articles and web sites devoted to this stuff, so if you can find any more truth to this, or a better way of stating it, let me know.

How are a kangaroo and a deer different?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

  • Kangaroos are marsupials and deer are placental mammals.
  • Most species of kangaroo have "embryonic diapause". This means female kangaroos can often be in a state of almost permanent pregnancy, with an embryo "suspended" until the mother's body is ready to release it - whether that be when another joey is sufficiently weaned, or feeding conditions have improved.
  • Kangaroos and deer move differently. Deer use all four legs to run and leap. Kangaroos mostly just use their hind legs. Deer can run very fast, but cannot sustain this speed for long distances. Kangaroos are able to travel long distances at a high speed, expending very little energy. They are very energy-efficient, and this is linked directly to the physical action of bringing their hind legs up with each hop. Every hop literally refills the lungs. Kangaroos have large, strong tendons in their hind legs which act as "springs". The springing motion requires less energy than running does, so kangaroos are able to bound for longer distances than other mammals with the standard four legs can run. They have strong back legs and elongated hind feet for bounding.
  • Kangaroos have long, strong tails for balancing. Deer have a small tail which does not serve any significant function.

User Avatar

Technically yes it could however it would take a very long time for the deer to become deceased. For the hawk to kill the deer it would have to rip and tear at the deer until it bleeds out.

Is a white tail deer chordata?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. As Chordates (or members of the phylum Chordata), deer share the following characteristics:

  • dorsal nerve cord which is a bundle of nerve fibres which runs down the back. It connects the brain with the lateral muscles and other organs.
  • notochord which is a cartilaginous rod running underneath, and supporting, the nerve cord - in the case of the deer, a spine.
  • post-anal tail - an extension of the body past the anal opening. (This feature is not always present in some adult Chordates such as frogs and humans, but it is present in the deer.)
  • Pharyngeal pouches - Chordates, at some stage of their life, have pharyngeal grooves and pouches that develop into other essential parts of their anatomy.
