World Series

"Neon" Deion Sanders is the only athlete to have played in both a Super Bowl and a World Series.

He played for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX where they routed the San Diego Chargers 49-26.

Sanders also played in the 1992 World Series for the Atlanta Braves, who lost in six to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The World Series is about a world championship against the National League champion and the American League champion. The World Series started in 1903 against the Boston Americans versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boston won 5 games to 3.

As of today, there was 108 World Series played ever since then.

Divisional play in the National League began in 1969 with the addition of the Montreal Expos (now Washington Nationals) and San Diego Padres to the League. The first ever NLCS was played in 1969.

The Cardinals won the 1968 National League pennant by 9 games over the San Francisco Giants.

It is called the Commissioner's Trophy and has been awarded to World Series championship teams since 1967. It is made of sterling silver by Tiffany & Co, and features 30 flags on a base, representing all major league baseball teams.

As of the 2008 World Series, that was Bobby Kielty of the Boston Red Sox in the 8th inning of Game 4 of the 2007 World Series. Prior to that, it was Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees in the 9th inning of Game 5 of the 2003 World Series.

Through the 2011 season, the Cardinals have played in 18 World Series and won 11 of them in the following years: 2011, 2006, 1982, 1967, 1964, 1946, 1944, 1942, 1934, 1931, and 1926.

That was Jack Quinn of the 1930 Philadelphia Athletics. Quinn pitched 2 innings in Game 3 of the 1930 World Series at the age of 47 years, 3 months, 3 days. Quinn was born July 1, 1883 and Game 3 was played October 4, 1930.

For winning the World Series it is the Texas Rangers who have, through 2011, never won a WS. Their first season in MLB was 1961 as the Washington Senators. The two teams with longer droughts are the Chicago Cubs who last won in 1908 and the Cleveland Indians who last won in 1948.

For playing in a World Series it is the Seattle Mariners who have, through 2011, never played in a WS. Their first season in MLB was 1977. The two teams with longer droughts are the Chicago Cubs who last played in 1945 and the Washington Nationals who have never played in a WS since entering MLB in 1969 as the Montreal Expos.

As of 2012 September, Suzuki has never even played in a World Series. Depending on how well the Yankees do in the post-season this year, this year may be his first.

1) 1926 St. Louis Cardinals won Games 6 and 7 at Yankee Stadium against the Yankees.
2) 1934 St. Louis Cardinals won Games 6 and 7 at Navin Field against the Detroit Tigers.
3) 1952 New York Yankees won Games 6 and 7 at Ebbets Field against the Brooklyn Dodgers.
4) 1958 New York Yankees won Games 6 and 7 at County Stadium against the Milwaukee Braves.
5) 1968 Detroit Tigers won Games 6 and 7 at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals.

For a regular season/playoff game, it is 92,706 at Game 5 of the 1959 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, also played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Toronto Blue Jays have only participated in two World Series in 1992 and 1993 and they have won both series, beating the Atlanta Braves in six games in 1992 and beating the Philadelphia Philles of the National League in six games in the 1993 World Series.

The Washington Nationals and the Seattle Mariners are the only two active MLB teams that have never been in the World Series.

World Series managers in 1981 were Tommy Lasorda of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Bob Lemon of the New York Yankees. In 1988 it was Lasorda and the Dodgers again, against Tony La Russa of the Oakland Athletics. Lasorda and the Dodgers won both series.

The San Francisco Giants won the 2014 World Series, outlasting the American League champion Kansas City Royals in seven games. It was the Giants' third world championship in five seasons. In the 2010 World Series, they defeated the Texas Rangers four games to one. They swept the Detroit Tigers in four games during the 2012 World Series.

The Detroit Tigers lost 1907, 1908, and 1909.

The NY Giants lost 1911, 1912, and 1913.

The Yankees lost 1921 and 1922, as well as 1963 and 1964.

The NY Giants lost 1923 and 1924, as well as 1936 and 1937 (all four to the New York Yankees!)

The Brooklyn Dodgers lost 1952 and 1953; and the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 1977 and 1978 (again, all four to the Yankees!).

Atlanta Braves lost 1991 and 1992.

The Phillies first year in the National League was 1883. From 1883-1889, the team was known as the Quakers.
