There are many different ways, but I'll tell you what I do.

I "rooted" my phone as soon as I got it home to rid the limited internal memory of all the factory bloatware that I knew I would never use.

You can download and install a custom ROM if that's what you like, but I stuck with the stock ROM because I didn't want to mess anything up accidentally.

I replaced the dinky 1GB SD card the phone came with and upgraded to an 8GB to store all my music and download apps.

I have the "FMR Memory" app as well as "Fast Reboot" to use in case I bog down my phones RAM by running too much stuff at the same time.

Also, it's a good idea to have the power control bar widget on your homescreen so you can turn off the function you're not using. This will help with performance as well as battery life.
