I would say it is for the most part (I own one). Sometimes, but rarely, messages won't be received/sent until 2 hours later. And dependent upon what service you have, sometimes it doesn't work in particular areas.
Also, it's pretty safe to drop. I dropped it on concrete and the back cover came off, the battery came out, and it still worked when I put it back together perfectly, just took a few scratches. :)
The Samsung Rant is a great phone for texters. If you do not like to text much or do not text much, then the Rant may not be the phone for you, since its main feature is the QWERTY keyboard.

Samsung Rant is a CDMA phone, and right now, there is no unlocking for CDMA phones. Unlocking can only be done on GSM phones.

It is a personal choice but I have a Samsung Rant and I love it. It slides open. I can't live without my cell and I think Rant's are the best!

That depdends on the phone. Putting music on a Samsung Rant will require much different steps than putting music on your Blackberry Curve.
Easy, the Samsung Rant is better by a long shot. The Rant comes with a USB cable and menory card, but the Rumor doesn't. The Rant also has more features (the Rant is a Sprint only phone). It can browse the internet a 3G speed, is Sprint TV capable, has a bigger and better keyboard, and the Sprint One Touch operating system is better than the Rumor's menu based system.
