Isoelectronic species are atoms, ions, or molecules that have the same number of electrons and, consequently, the same electronic structure. This results in them having similar chemical and physical properties, despite potentially differing in their nuclear charges or overall charge. Common examples include the nitrogen atom (N), the nitride ion (N³⁻), and the oxygen molecule (O₂), all of which have ten electrons. Isoelectronic species are often used in chemistry to predict reactivity and bonding behavior.
Cesium(I), Cs+1 is an iso-electronic ion to Ba2+ and also iodine, I-1 ions and xenon, Xe0 atoms are iso-electronic to Ba2+ ions.They all have the [Xe] electron configuration: [2, 8, 18, 18, 8], 0
Magnesium is element #12; the most common isotope is magnesium 24, which has 12 protons and 12 neutrons.
Sulphur is not iso-electronic with any noble gas. However sulphide ion (S2- ion) is iso-electronic with argon with 18 electrons.
The International Standards Organization (ISO) is the overarching world authority in this area. There are many national standards bodies in every country but as the world needs to trade, standards now have to be ratified internationally.
