The famous and historic prison in San Francisco is Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, commonly known as Alcatraz. It operated from 1934 to 1963 and housed some of the most notorious criminals in American history, including Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the "Birdman of Alcatraz." Located on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, it became renowned for its high-security measures and the difficulty of escape. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and a National Historic Landmark.
