One innovative way that the United Parcel Service uses technology is through a Delivery Information Acquisition Device or DIAD. The device began being used in trucks nation-wide starting in early 1991. This DIAD looks just like a little hand held computer that drivers carry wherever they go. With this device "a UPS driver can automatically capture customers' signatures along with pickup, delivery, and time-card information" [1]. The UPS driver then places their handheld device into an adaptor in their truck which then downloads all the new information and sends it to a UPS network. Not only are the packages scanned when they arrive at their final destination, but they are tracked with the system from the moment that the customer brings in a package to be shipped. The package can be tracked from warehouse to warehouse until it reaches the delivery place. This allows for packages to be tracked wherever they go, and allows now only UPS to know where they package is at, it also lets customers follow the shipment of their package.
