San Francisco was originally named "Yerba Buena," which translates to "Good Herb" in Spanish, referring to the wild mint that grew in the area. The name was used when the settlement was founded in 1776. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, the name was changed to San Francisco, named after the nearby Mission San Francisco de Asís, which was established in 1776.
