Nearly all calls from phones in developed counties (regardless of hardwired, VoIP or cellular) are processed through computer controlled switches that always maintain the data right down to the point of origin and the hundredth of second for call duration. Even if you paid cash for a phone card (or wear gloves and shove coins into a coin operated phone), there's always the opportunity for law enforcement to figure out where & when a particular phone was used and by whom through forensics & surveillance cameras that are becoming more prolific by the day. If the phone is located in a private area, the risk of being caught is much greater due to the limited number of people having access to the phone.
