Chickens, like turkey's, do not fly well. They can and do fly for short periods but a sustained flight from altitude would not be pretty. Just ask Les Nesmond from WKRP radio about dropping live turkey's from helicopters. However, in fairness to the turkeys, and given the hypothetical (TV) situation desribed above, which I was priviledged to watch; the turkeys would never have a chance. The show didn't mention the fact that the blade wash from a helicopter would blow an eagle, sparrow, or a hummingbird right out of the sky, to say nothing of a bunch of inexperienced, over-weight turkeys with under-developed, too small wings. Domestic turkeys weigh in at about twice the weight of their wild cousins. The same thing applys to most domestic breeds of chickens, although they are much better flyers than their gobbling counterparts. However, it should be noted that some breeds of chickens are pretty good flyers, not hummingbird good, but good for chickens: Banty chickens, to name one, but they probably wouldn't do well under the chopper either.
