Yes, you can set ringtones for text messages on the lg 500g. Just go to menu, then My Folder. Scroll down to Sounds, (in the case of default sounds), then open Default Sounds. Go to the sound you want as your text message ringtone then click the left key, or options. Click on Use As, then just scroll down to Message Tone, click the middle button, or select, and then the selected ring is set as your text message ring tone!
To set up a ringtone for incoming text messages on the Ace, open the messaging app and go to its settings. Look for the "Notifications" or "Sound" option, where you can select a specific ringtone for text messages. Choose your preferred sound from the list or add a custom one if supported. Finally, save your settings to apply the new ringtone for incoming texts.
you go to settings or go to the message settings.

It depends on your phone's model. I have the Samsung Zeal. To do it, go to the following: Media Center>Music and Tones> My Ringtones> select the tone> Save As> Alert Tones> TXT Message.
I have one myself and how it works is that you go to a sound, Push options, click set as and push ringtone or individual ringtone and there you go! (Exept mine won't change anymore, I think it's breaking.)
You have to make the tone 30sec. Long :3
