Innocenzo Manzetti stated the idea of a telephone in 1844.

In 1854 Charles Bourseul published how the system would work.

In 1860 Johann Philipp Reis sent musical notes through wire.

An early version of the telephone was invented around 1860 by Antonio Meucci who called it teletrofono.

In 1870 Mr. C. F. Varley, several modes to the patent of the "audio telegraph" were made.

In 1876 Elisha Gray, patented another musical version of the wire transmitter.

Later in 1876 Alexander Graham Bell finally invented the system the above guys were using.

By the early 1900's they were becoming common. By the late 40's most homes had them.
