Social networking sites are bringing short term benefits and long term harm. They share immediacy. A lot of people get to keep up with a lot of people. If someone needs a job or a date, they can help each other out. They can be there for each other. They throw away the past. I can not look at face book and see anything that happened before June. Those relationships are gone, forever vaporized. Social networking has difficulty communicating across generational lines. Not only do grandparents no longer help raise grandchildren, they do not know how to communicate with them. They come at the loss of face to face skills. One woman moved to a new neighborhood. She had no idea how to make friends with any new neighbors. The computer networking skills did not help her. They were a comfort in her loneliness but she wanted to chat to people. She had lost the skill of meeting new people. Social networking sites are a tool. They should not be used as a drug.
