Use the discussion area.
The discussion page IS the proper place to add additional background info to the question. Many people try to add it as an answer instead - but 'answering' the question means a lot of potential answerers won't see it.
Write a concise summary as the question title, and then add the additional info using the Discuss tool.

You can add extra information for questions by using the provide additional info through a web link option just above the answer text area. You can use that and add links that can provide further information about the question.
Should you not be able to state your question fully you can add additional information in the discussion area. It should be noted that should a question be complex enough to require such additional information it may be beyond the scope of this website to answer.

If you look on the left side of your screen on the question page under "Question Tools," you'll see a link that says "Discuss." This is where you can add additional details!
