Go into settings (bottom left of your menu screen), then once your in settings, click on sound profiles (top of the list), then you will have all your different sound profiles, eg. Normal, Silent, Driving, Meeting etc. Scroll down to any profile (the one you use most, such as Normal) then press edit, and there will be all your sound settings to adjust, such as Voice call ringtone (just your normal ringtone) Message Alert Tone, Volume etc. click change, now adjust to your requirements, click save and then you are done.

It depends on your phone's model. I have the Samsung Zeal. To do it, go to the following: Media Center>Music and Tones> My Ringtones> select the tone> Save As> Alert Tones> TXT Message.
