That depends what you are downloading.
if you download a file that is for windows but on a mac then it wont work because all windows programs are scripted for windows. likewise with macs.
but if you want a download a file for mac but not sure if it is scripted for windows or mac try typing in for what you are searching something like "Free games scripted for mac".
