Mr. Bell didn't come up with it. The idea, as an electromechanical device, had been around since at least 1844, and in less sophisticated form, for centuries before that.

The history of the invention of the telephone is a little murky: lots of claims, counter claims, law suits, etc. However, it is clear that along the way it had many names, and there were many contributors.

Alexander Bell, who is normally given credit for the invention, was only responsible for a couple of dramatic improvements. So actually, his accomplishment was to invent the first usefultelephone.

In 1875, US. Patent 161,739 for Transmitters and Receivers for Electric Telegraphs, was granted to Bell. This improvement used vibrating steel reeds as circuit breakers.

In1876, US. patent 174,465 for Improvement in Telegraphy, was granted to Bell. This improvement was the causing of electrical undulations similar in form to the vibrations of the voice of the sender, using electromagnets with undulating current.

There was an interesting race with Elisha Gray for this patent.
