How did john logie baird get the idea from tv?

Like so many inventors, John Logie Baird worked on his invention for years before finally producing the world's first television. The thought processes of an inventor are rambling, disorganized and chaotic until the moments when solutions present themselves. Some of Baird's ideas came from his own thinking but others were gathered from the great minds that had gone before him.

Perhaps the most significant idea came from a European engineer and inventor called Paul Nipkow. He patented an idea to use a rotating disc with a series of holes in it to capture an image on paper and turn it into a series of electrical signals. This was the first ever facsimile machine although Nipkow never put it into production. In fact, some say that he never actually built the disc itself.

Baird used the idea of the disc but changed its application from a still image capture to a higher speed moving image capture system. The idea of splitting a moving image into a continual stream of data has been the fundamental principle of television ever since. Make no mistake, the small change in application of the disc represented a huge leap forward in technology and a huge idea on the part of Baird.

Oddly, although John Logie Baird invented television, he called it a "Televisor" rather than "television".

Both names come from the Greek language. "Tele" comes from the word for "far" and "visor" or "vision" both come from the word "to see". So, both televisor and television mean "distant vision". Sadly for Baird, his name didn't stick and was quickly replaced by television.
