None until approx. 1876, when the first commercially practical telephones were developed and leased for customers to use for point-to-point private lines. A few years later multiple customers in an area were able to make calls to each other through the local exchange switchboard. As the technology was developed further, exchanges were able to connect to each other through trunk lines. After that growth of telephone systems and new customers became more practical, and the service became more useful as a means of communication to more places.
