Dog Breeds were formed over thousands of years by selectively breeding wolves. Dogs with desirable traits were mated selectively with other desirable ones, so that they could be used by humans for various tasks. Those that did not have desirable traits were often prevented from mating. Overtime, the traits that humans wanted (such as looks, attitudes, size, aggressivity, etc.) were generally preserved. However, different people want dogs with different traits, so not all dogs are the same. This is why there are many dog breeds, because they were each "created" for a purpose.
