I have had the same problem. When you contact Tracfone they will tell you the local carrier does not provide it or the towers in your area can't send data. But what it is is Tracfone is unwilling to provide the service to you and the people in your area. I contacted my local provider and they do provide the service but Tracfone is unwilling to provide it to the customers. I called Tracfone and after 30 minutes I fianally got a superviser to admit Tracfone is unwilling to provide data service in my area even though they keep blaming the local carriers

To be able to buy Tracfone units from your phone you have to go to the Tracfone website at tracfone.com then search buy tracfone units from your phone. Then go up to the top to the tabs and mouse over Buy Airtime and click on Buy Airtime from your Tracfone. Although to be able to buy minutes from your phone you have to have a Tracfone account. Tracfone is the oldest of the MVNOs. (They weren't even called that back then). Essentially, the network is the same but you pay a lot less on Tracfone's prepaid service. Verizon is a carrier using CDMA technology (as does Sprint). It is difficult to switch CDMA phones from one network to another. Its much easier on GSM which is the technology used by T-Mobile and AT&T. In fact, 95% of all networks in the world are GSM. The Bottom Line - You may be able to find a local Tracfone dealer who can "re-program" (hack) your Verizon phone to work on Tracfone. The main reason you'd want to do this is that Tracfone's service is really cheap but they offer only really crappy phones.
