You use a rectal thermometer. It's considered best to keep it separate from your oral thermometer. If you only have one thermometer, it's recommended that you sterilize it very well with rubbing alcohol every time it's used. If you can't sterilize your only thermometer, at least try to keep a straight face next time you put it in a patient's mouth. (I'm joking! You really should use a separate thermometer!)
