The owner of a North American toll-free number can choose the parts of North America in which the number should be made available, including countries or states or provinces, or even specific neighborhoods of a city. If you are outside the zone(s) from which that number accepts calls, then your only options are to try a web-based phone service or look on the web for a regular geographic number.

The toll-free codes currently in use are 800, 888, 877, 866, and 855, with 844, 833, and 822 reserved for future toll-free use.

If you are calling from the United States, just dial 1 + area code + number, the same as a long distance call within the US. (Note, however, that international rates may apply.)

If you are calling from outside North America (USA, Canada, and 18 assorted island nations and territories in or near the Caribbean that share the same telephone numbering system), the country code for North America (including Canada) is +1.

Calling on a mobile phone, just dial +1 (including the plus symbol), followed by the area code (3 digits) and subscriber number (7 digits).

Calling on a landline phone or a fax machine, replace the plus symbol with YOUR international access prefix. The most common prefix is 00, but many countries use other prefixes.
