In alchemy, rust is often symbolically associated with decay and transformation. To obtain rust, alchemists would typically expose iron to moisture and air, allowing it to oxidize and form iron oxide. This process symbolizes the cycle of destruction and rebirth, reflecting the alchemical principle of transformation. Additionally, rust may be used as a metaphor for spiritual corrosion or the need for purification in the alchemical journey.

Zed's alchemy
You don't make an alchemy, alchemy is when you cast a spell on something and it turns it into money.
The reason Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric can perform alchemy without an array or transmutation circle is because they have already broken the number one rule of alchemy-never perform HUMAN alchemy,or never try and create a human or bring a human back to life. And because they have broken this rule they have already seen the one-way road to heaven at the cost of loosing their limbs, and they can simply slap their hands together and touch the object they are willing to change, such as a flower for a ribbon,a pin for a needle and so on.Another major rule in alchemy is never try and turn objects into gold.Sometimes Edward can get a LITTLE greedy and his artificial limbs sort of rust up,that is why alchemy cannot be used for greed or self purposes, you must only use alchemy for other people that was a major lesson Edward and Alphonse learned later on in the series.
