When you logon, up the top right-hand corner will be your avatar name. Beside it, it should say 'Available'. Click on it, and a drop down menu will appear. It will say things such as 'busy', 'Teens only', 'away', and I believe Offline is there too. Anyway, click which ever one you want, (in your case, away or Offline) and your friends will no longer know that you're online.
