There is really nothing to it. You sign up and select a user ID of some sort. Then you would network with users who are in your family, among your real friends, or who have similar interests and add them as "friends." When you change your status, give updates, or do other things on the network, your "friends" would know about it (unless you disable that for certain activities).

Social networks often have other features like games. In those, you can invite your "friends" from the network to play the games with you and to help you in them. News and social interest features may be added, and others may get to see what interests you, what you watch, what you listen to while using the site, and so on.

There are both "general" and "interest-specific" type social networks (my terms). General would mean that it has a broad range of features. Facebook and MySpace are examples of these. Interest-specific would would mean it has a specific theme and also has a message board and ability to add friends. Examples of interest-specific social networks would be dating sites and certain games (like WoozWorld which includes Wooz-in which is used for watching other player's message walls and seeing your friends list). Black Planet would fit here since it is mainly set up for dating and promoting music. Classmates.com is another example, since it is limited to finding other former classmates and has limited social networking features.
